I started my blog back in May. I wanted it to be an outlet to share my experiences of living with fibromyalgia but also to raise awareness of chronic illness. It has evolved into me sharing my love of interiors too primarily through my Instagram account. So, you’d like to start your own blog? Read this blog post to find out how you too can have your own blog.
What is self-hosting?
There are a lot of companies out there where you can have their domain and host your website through them. A domain is the website address. I knew that I wanted my own domain address so I went with a self-hosting company called TSO host. Here, I bought my domain of myfibrohome.co.uk along with an email address too and I pay around £4.80 something per month so host the URL.
Are there any benefits to self-hosting?
By self-hosting your blog you are in complete control over it. You can have freedom over what you post, your theme, layout, design – the possibilities are endless! Websites that aren’t self-hosted often come with a more expensive price tag too so for self-hosting was the way forward.
How can I start my own blog?
1. Decide on a name.
Deciding on a name took my a while. I wanted to make sure that the name was available on all social media platforms. This meant that my brand is easy to find, easy to remember and accessible too.
I’d suggest jotting any ideas that you have down and mulling over them. Check that there are social media accounts free with the name and also check that there is not already a website with that name. You can use Namecheckr to do this quite easily.
Ideally you want your name to be short, catchy, easy to spell and easy to remember. If your name is all of these things then you’re more likely to get blog traffic than a long name which is harder to remember. I then bought my domain through TSO Host.
2. Buy your domain.
I bought my domain through TSO host who’s link I have popped in below:
There are over 500 domains that you can choose from. Each have a different price but they are affordable. You pay for the domain as a one off for the year.
3. Install WordPress.
Once you have bought your domain and chosen your hosting plan (I have the Startup Cloud Webhosting) you are then able to install WordPress.
Click on Services and then where the service is listed click on that. You’ll then be taken to a Manage Product page. From here click on login to control panel.
You’ll then be taken to a page where you’ll see this menu at the top.
Click onto manage website and then scroll down to the bottom of the page where you’ll see Appliation Options.
Click onto Install Applications. From here you need to click on New Software Installation and search for WordPress.
You’ll then need to create a WordPress account and will be shown login details on your screen. Make sure that you take a copy or photograph these details as you will not be shown them again. You’ll then be able to log into WordPress.
From here you will then be able to change your theme and make other changes to your blog. There are quite a lot of free themes but there are also some that you can buy too. I’d make sure that you take a look at the reviews of the free themes just to make sure it’s right for you.
I hope that this has helped you get into blogging. There really is a world of opportunities out there. Let me know how you get on! If you start a blog leave me your links below. I’d love to have a read!
